'the rationalists' manifest' was written on February 10, 1968 for the Fiumbalo International Festival, Modena and published as 'why to work' in Pentabox (1969). Reprinted in (among others) Ta'box n° 2 (Copenhagen 1969), as a pamphlet the rationalist' manifest by Galerie Riekje Swart : Amsterdam 1970), in the exhibition catalogue herman de vries. random objectivations (Kunsthistorisch Instituut : Amsterdam 1970), in herman de vries : vijf manifesten over taal - en een gedicht = fünf manifeste über sprache - und ein gedicht ... (artists press : bern 1975) and in to be : texte - textarbeiten - textbilder (Stuttgart 1995) 64.
